Charles “Charlie” “Sonny” Shelton, 80, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. Charles was a faithful member of Greenwood Baptist Church, where his faith and kind spirit touched many. He was also a proud Mason, valuing fellowship, integrity, and service throughout his years of membership.

For 42 years, Charlie worked as a spinner and in the powerhouse at DuPont, dedicating himself to hard work and providing for his family before retiring with the respect and friendship of his coworkers.

Outside of work, Sonny enjoyed the simple joys that made life rich. He was a devoted fan of the Tennessee Volunteers and rarely missed a chance to cheer them on. He loved fishing and found peace on the water with a rod in his hand.

More than anything, Sonny loved his family. He loved watching his grandchildren play sports, as well as compete in cheer competitions, and he rarely missed a game or event. Whether cheering from the stands, wearing outrageous fake hair, or celebrating every routine, goal or point with enthusiasm, he made sure his grandchildren always knew they were supported and loved.

He will be deeply missed.

Sonny was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan; his parents, and his cousin, Terry Bryant.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Virginia; children, Tim Shelton (Jill), Cheri Elliott (Tim), and Mark Shelton (Stephanie); grandchildren, Ragan, Drew, Tyler, Kailee, Sophie, Delaney, Ellie, Kendal and Maci, as well as a great-grandchild on the way.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 22, 2026 from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Turner Funeral Home @ Hwy 58.
