The Hon. Douglas Alexander Meyer

The Hon. Douglas Alexander Meyer, 84, of Nashville, TN passed away peacefully on Feb. 12, 2017 following a lengthy illness. Born in Chattanooga, TN, he graduated from Chattanooga City High School. After a stint in the U.S. Army, he earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Chattanooga and his law degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Judge Meyer began his career as an Assistant District Attorney before going into private practice. After first being appointed Chattanooga City Judge, he went on to win reelection to that bench. He was then elected as Criminal Court Judge Division I in 1982, a post he held for 24 years, until his retirement in 2006 and subsequent move to Florida.

An avid golfer, Judge Meyer loved living on Rivermont Golf Course, where he spent many evenings walking and playing the course. An animal lover, his constant companions were his beloved pets, many of which were Scotties and Westies. He was very active in the community, serving in various capacities for multiple organizations over the years, including Bethel Bible Village, the Jaycees, Johnson Mental Health Center, and Alhambra Shrine. As a keen student of history, he was a voracious reader and continued his pursuit of knowledge throughout his life.

Judge Meyer was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Katherine Meyer.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Nashville, and his two sons, Alex, of Redding, CA and Rob (Liesel), of Nashville; two grandsons, Blake, of Albuquerque, NM and Will, of Nashville; brothers Gene (Juana) and Frank Jr., both of Chattanooga; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home, 3913 Webb Rd., Chattanooga, TN. There will be no funeral service.

The family would like to thank Barton House and Avalon Hospice for their care and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Bethel Bible Village or McKamey Animal Center.
