Obituary

Franklin Denzil Richmond, 89, passed away on November 15, 2024, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Born on September 17, 1935, Frank was known for his deep faith as a born-again Christian, his exceptional sense of humor, and his loyalty to family and friends. He was the beloved son of a coal miner, born in Fireco, West Virginia, embodying the strength and resilience learned from his parents, Hallie Marie Richmond (née Terry) and Obey Owen Richmond.

Frank proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. His dedication to his country was mirrored in his long and distinguished career at Vought Corporation (LTV) and United Space Alliance, where he contributed 50 years to the United States Space Program. He played a pivotal role in the development of the astronaut suit used during the first Moon landing, working on projects from Mercury to Space Shuttle programs.

A resident of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Arlington/Ft. Worth and Clear Lake City, Texas and most recently, at Everlan Senior Living in Hixson, Tennessee, he never forgot his West Virginia origins. He was a devoted husband to Carol Jean Richmond (née Clemons) for 68 years and a loving father to Teresa Lynn Flahaut (Stan), Debra Kay Griffin (Kirk), and William Cary Richmond (Kathy). Franklin was also a cherished brother to Everece "Ace" Richmond. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Manford Richmond, Betty Richmond Suddreth, Minyard Richmond; stepmother, Hattie Pearl Richmond (née Riddle) and stepsister, Sylvia Riddle Rennick.

Frank's education began at Fireco and continued at Stoco High School before he pursued a degree in Engineering at Oklahoma State University. His passion for learning extended into his personal interests; he was an avid student of the Bible, loved studying Bible prophecy, and enjoyed tracing his family roots. Frank also cherished spending time with his family and traveling, especially to Port St. Joe/Cape San Blas, Florida.

He served as a deacon and bible teacher at North Side Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas, Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas, and Lamar Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas, where he was deeply involved in community and church activities.

Frank leaves behind a loving family, including his grandchildren, Bradley Kirk Griffin, Brett Laurence Griffin (Kate), Brooke Richmond Griffin, Dustan Ryan Flahaut (Sarah), and great-grandchildren Winnie, Yates, Sarah, and Franklin Holt Griffin, who was named in honor of his great-grandfathers.  He was affectionately known as "Frankie D" to his numerous nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in law, as well as many friends.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. at Turner Funeral Home in Chattanooga, TN.  A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel with Pastor Chuck Patrick officiating.
