Obituary

Harold "Harry" Dewayne Whitlow, 66, of Antioch, Tennessee passed away at home surrounded by family on May 1, 2025. He was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on May 16,1958.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Jo Tompkins; stepfather, Hayward "Rusty" Tompkins; father, Howard B. Whitlow; sister, Connie Kernea and Neice Mindy Kernea.

He leaves behind a loving family including his brother, Jimmy Whitlow, Chattanooga, TN; Nieces Logan Barteky (Peyton) of Kingston Springs, TN and Alison Kernea of Chattanooga, TN; Nephews Landon Whitlow of Soddy-Daisy, TN and Ricky Kernea of Chattanooga, TN.

At thirteen years old Harold was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. He earned all three Eagle Palms (Bronze, Gold, Silver) at the age of fourteen, a feat that only 60 out of 100,000 Scouts achieve. He was a graduate of Chattanooga Central High School's class of 1976 and a proud twelve-year veteran of the United States Navy. For most of his Naval career Harold was assigned to the super carrier USS Kitty Hawk working as a Systems Organizational Maintenance Technician, specializing in the area of Avionics. He had concentrated responsibilities on the maintenance and repairs to the C-130 Hercules aircraft and CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter. He spent the last two and a half years of his military service teaching maintenance, repair and Aviation electronics classes at the Naval Base San Diego (NBSD).

After leaving the Navy, Harold worked as a technician for CPI Card Group in San Diego, CA, a company that provides card programs and personalization services for financial institutions. He soon returned to Chattanooga where he was employed by Olan Mills as an equipment technician and Safety Compliance Manager. He left Olan Mills and relocated to the Nashville, TN area where he spent the next 17 years working as the Technical Project Manager for EFT Source Inc., which was acquired by CPI Card Group in 2014. He created in-house maintenance programs, service procedures and documentation, assembled a staff of on-site technicians and built an inventory of critical parts, eliminating the need for the use of outside contractors. Harold had a very productive and successful career working in the financial technology sector.

To sum Harold up in a few words, he was meticulous, detailed, organized and big-hearted. He had a great love for animals and was willing to help anyone in true need. A kind and caring soul who will be missed by many; And thank you Toby for the smiles given in the last weeks of life.

Per his wishes, there will not be a traditional viewing or service. He will be buried at the Chattanooga National Memorial Cemetery. There will be a brief memorial service to include a small gathering of family and friends with retired Army Chaplain Christian Goza presiding.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to St. Jude, Shriners, Make-A-Wish foundation, the American Cancer Society, ASPCA or a non-profit organization supporting military veterans (Homes for Our Troops, DAV (Disabled American Veterans), the Gary Sinise foundation).
