Obituary

James "Jim" L. Holcomb (1949–2025)

James (Jim) L. Holcomb, age 76, of Harrison, Tennessee, passed away on September 13, 2025.

Born in Chattanooga and raised in the Standifer Gap community, Jim was a proud graduate of Tyner High School, Class of 1967. He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville before serving in the Air National Guard. A man of many talents and endless curiosity, Jim lived a life marked by hard work, community service, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Though officially retired, Jim never slowed down. He was a familiar and beloved presence in Harrison, known for his involvement with the Harrison Ruritan Club—where he was honored as a Forever Ruritan—and attended Greenwood Baptist Church. A passionate genealogist and lifelong learner, Jim had a knack for figuring things out—no matter how unfamiliar the task. If something needed doing, Jim would find a way.

His career path was as dynamic as his personality. He owned a service station on Highway 58, worked in finance with Ford Motor Credit and Whirlpool Acceptance Corporation/ABCC, and later transitioned into sales with Appliance Distributors and Imperial Cup/International Paper. Eventually, Jim ventured out on his own, founding J & J 4 Wheel Drive in the early 1990s. His creative energy led him to launch Awards and Trophies by Design as a hobby, and in 2013, he opened Chattanooga Monument Company, which he semi-retired from in 2018.

Jim was truly a "Jim of all trades"—a man whose presence lit up every room, whose hands built businesses and friendships alike, and whose legacy will live on in the many lives he touched.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Susan E. McNeely Holcomb; son Jason (Keisha) Holcomb; daughter Lori (Michael) Clements; and his best dog, Zac. He is also survived by his sister, Laura Sandor of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Jason Jr. (Beth) Holcomb, Katlyn (Garrett) Samples, Madison (Carlos) Orellano, Drew (Madison) Mathis, Kolby (Harlee) Holcomb, and Gunnar (Jamie) Mathis. He leaves behind nine great-grandchildren—and one more on the way. Jim also had a large extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, C.F. Holcomb Sr. and Mary Emma Stiff Holcomb; brothers Cheyne, Charles, John, and Gene Holcomb; and sisters Margaret Martin and Shirley Watkins.
