Obituary

Juanita Elizabeth (Barnard) Johnson, 92, a loving and dedicated wife to the late Carroll W. Johnson, a loving mother to the late Carol E. (Johnson) (Spurgeon) (Keeney), grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, went home to be with the Lord on January 4, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on May 9, 1931, and was a lifelong resident of Harrison, TN.

She became a member of Greenwood Baptist Church when she was 13 years old, she taught Sunday School for a few years, and she retired from the Tennessee Department of Employment Security after nearly 25 years of service.  At the age of 18, Juanita worked for Judge James H. Anderson and Major B. Harris. She graduated from Tyner High School and Cleveland State Community College with a paralegal degree.  She also attended Edmondson Business College, Chattanooga State, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.  Juanita has been a Red Cross and Auxiliary Volunteer since December 1, 1960, and served in several hospitals.

She is known as the community family historian researcher and notary since 1974, Past Worthy Matron of Harrison Chapter #56, Eastern Star, the Ooltewah Chapter #365 in 2010, past Royal Matron of Amaranth Christian Court #4, past High Priestess of Asehi Court #36, Lady Shiner, and past member of Daughter of the Nile.

Juanita was proceeded in death by her loving husband, Carroll W. Johnson; parents, Thomas and Edith (Rayl) Barnard; daughter, Carol E. (Johnson) (Spurgeon) Keeney, and her only sibling, Robert S. Barnard.

She is survived by her son-in-law, Mark D. Keeney; four grandchildren, Lloyd G. (Shannon) Spurgeon Jr., Timothy R. Spurgeon, William M. (Debra) Keeney, and Tonya E. (Keeney) Appugliese; great-grandchildren, Cameron C. (Grace) Spurgeon, Sky B. Spurgeon, Savannah M. Spurgeon, Heather N. (Hershel) Cooper, Kaitlyn A. (Bronson) Pierce, Gabriel J.(Nicky Smith) Spurgeon, Noah T. Spurgeon, Harrison R. Spurgeon, Taylor E. Keeney, Terra C. Keeney, Tristin Weiss, and Gabriella E. Appugliese; four great-great-grandchildren, McKinley G. Cooper, Dallas W. Cooper, Thaddeus B. Spurgeon, and Adaline O. Pierce; two sisters-in-law, Hazel (Johnson) Morrison of Dublin, CA, and Lillian Griffith of Cleveland, TN, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Juanita will be sadly missed by all.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 from 4 – 8 p.m. at Turner Funeral Home @ Hwy 58.  A visitation will also be held on Thursday, January 11, 2024 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.  A funeral service will follow at 12 p.m. in the chapel with Brother David Ferguson officiating.

She will be laid to rest in the Old McDonald Cemetery in Ooltewah, TN with a white dove release.
