Obituary

Viola Hudson

Viola C Eckman Hudson, 88, passed away on Friday, February 19, 2016 following a long battle with Parkinson's disease and dementia. She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga, and spent a great deal of her life in service to others.
Ms. Hudson was born in Graysville, Tennessee on March 5, 1927. She was a child of the "Great Depression", who spent most of her childhood years on Graysville Mountain before coming to the city of Chattanooga in her late teens in search of work. Her desire to work hard and make her mark in this world led her into the service industry as a professional waitress. Her work history includes a sort of "Who's Who" of Chattanooga's restaurant history, including Browns BBQ on Broad Street, Knox McCardle's Tick Tock in East Ridge and Quality Inn in East Ridge, where she worked for the Uptain family. In the 80's she worked for Robert and Al Fehn at Fehn's on the River. Once she retired from work in the restaurant industry, her desire to serve took her into her local school system in the Ooltewah area. She served as a cashier in the cafeteria at Ooltewah Intermediate School in the 1990's, and often covered the expense of an upgrade from regular milk to chocolate milk for some of the children who came through her line.
Ms. Hudson was a woman of strong faith and a member of both Trinity Woodmore United Methodist Church and most recently Brainerd United Methodist Church. She was a member of Brainerd UMC's Friendship Sunday School Class and often enjoyed lunches with Brainerd's AO's. Following her retirement, Ms. Hudson spent a number of years volunteering at Brainerd UMC as a front desk helper. Ms. Hudson was truly blessed and was a blessing to others, and her faith, work and love were a true testament to that.
Ms. Hudson was preceded in death by her parents, Pauline Stepp Capps and John Newton Capps; seven siblings; her husbands and other extended family members and friends.
She is survived by her three children, Paula Cureton, Floyd "Bud" Branlow (Cathy) Manning III and Karen Manning, all of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Jennifer (Gerald) Turner of Aledo, Texas, Patrick Manning of Soddy Daisy, Thomas (Sarah) Cureton of Bealeton, Virginia, Justin (Kimberly) Manning of Fargo, North Dakota and Johnel (Dan) Evans of Salt Lake City, Utah; great grandchildren, Zoey Manning of Fargo, North Dakota, Sadie Cureton of Bealeton, Virginia and Aidan and Riley Evans of Salt Lake City, Utah; a niece, Mildred Blackwell of Tunnel Hill, Georgia and a nephew, Boots (Jewell) Capps of Graysville, Tennessee.
